Reducing Psychotropic Drugs May Improve Behavior, Mood, and Daily Abilities in Nursing Home Patients

Updated

Abstract

Medication reviews resulted in a reduction in the total and regular number of prescribed psychotropic drugs in nursing home patients.

  • A total of 723 patients were enrolled, with 428 participating in the study.
  • The intervention group experienced an improvement in activities of daily living (ADL), while the control group deteriorated.
  • No significant differences were observed in behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) between the intervention and control groups.
  • The study suggests that medication reviews may allow for safe deprescribing without negatively impacting BPSD.
