Effects of a Gradual Team-Based Program on Difficult Behavior in Late-Stage Dementia

Updated

Abstract

The intervention led to a significant reduction in agitation scores by 4.07 points among nursing home residents with advanced dementia.

  • A multilevel model showed that residents in the intervention group exhibited lower agitation, as measured by the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory.
  • Significant reductions were also observed in neuropsychiatric symptoms, with a mean difference of -3.57 points on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory.
  • Depression symptoms decreased significantly, indicated by a mean difference of -1.59 points on the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia.
  • Fewer antidepressants were prescribed in the intervention group, with an odds ratio of 0.32.
  • Reductions in the use of antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and hypnotic-sedatives were noted, although these were not statistically significant.
