How Diabetes Affects Liver Function

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is closely associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), which has a high prevalence in T2D patients.

  • There is a bidirectional relationship between T2D and MASLD, driven by insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and increased lipid deposition.
  • MASLD is a leading cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
  • Management of T2D in patients with MASLD includes lifestyle interventions and optimization of cardiometabolic risk factors.
  • Antidiabetic medications, such as SGLT-2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists, may be evaluated for their role in treatment.
  • Early identification of MASLD could help guide treatment strategies and reduce progression to liver cirrhosis in high-risk individuals.
