Do Diabetes Medications Help Lower Dementia Risk?

Updated

Abstract

Analysis of 67 trials involving 4,088,683 individuals indicates that certain antidiabetic agents may influence dementia risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RA), thiazolidinediones (TZD), and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i) are associated with a reduced risk of dementia.
  • Insulin use is linked to an increased risk of developing dementia.
  • No significant association with dementia risk was found for metformin, sulfonylureas, glinides, and α-glucosidase inhibitors.
  • The relative effectiveness of antidiabetic agents in reducing dementia risk ranks as follows: SGLT2i > GLP1-RA > TZD > DPP4i, with insulin having the lowest rank.
