How Diet Nutrients Relate to Blood Vessel Health in People with Long COVID

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 304 patients with Long COVID, total energy intake and absolute carbohydrate intake were negatively associated with central arterial stiffness (cfPWV).

  • Higher energy intake and carbohydrate intake in grams per day were linked to lower cfPWV values.
  • A positive relationship was found between the percentage of carbohydrate in total energy intake and arterial wave reflection measured by augmentation index (AIx@75).
  • Conversely, a higher percentage of fat in total energy intake was associated with lower AIx@75 values.
  • No significant associations were detected for carotid intima-media thickness, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, cardio-ankle vascular index, or vascular aging index.
  • These findings suggest that macronutrient intake may influence certain vascular parameters in patients with Long COVID.
