Diet and Nutrition Management for Patients Using GLP-1 and Dual GIP/GLP-1 Medicines Alongside Lifestyle Changes: A Review of Clinical Trials

Abstract

Involving 7096 participants, a systematic review found that GLP-1 and dual GIP/GLP-1 agonists frequently increase gastrointestinal symptoms.

  • Participants experienced gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting, which were often related to the dosage of the medication.
  • Lean mass was generally preserved during weight loss, with reductions being proportional to the overall weight loss experienced.
  • No studies directly assessed the impact of these medications on bone health.
  • No clinically relevant nutritional deficiencies were reported across the trials.
  • Most trials included in the review demonstrated a low risk of bias.
