Changes in Food and Nutrient Intake from 1960 to 1991 in Two Rural Italian Groups

Updated

Abstract

A marked decrease in energy intake was observed from 1960 to 1991 in two rural Italian cohorts.

  • Energy intake reduction is attributed to both aging and decreased physical activity.
  • Food group intake trends showed increases in milk, cheese, meat, vegetables, fruit, sweet beverages, and desserts.
  • Decreases were noted for bread and alcoholic beverages, more pronounced in Montegiorgio.
  • The Mediterranean Adequacy Index declined from 2.9 to 2.2 in Crevalcore and from 5.6 to 3.9 in Montegiorgio over the study period.
  • Dietary habits in both cohorts diverged further from the Reference Italian-Mediterranean Diet, especially in Crevalcore.
