7.4% of participants reported persistent short sleep over 5 years.

  • An increase in short-duration sleepers (<7 hours) and a decrease in long-duration sleepers (≥9 hours) was observed over the study period.
  • The highest quartile of fat intake from dinner at baseline was associated with persistent short sleep over 5 years, with an odds ratio of 3.30.
  • The highest quartile of fat intake from breakfast at baseline was linked to reduced daytime sleepiness at follow-up, with an odds ratio of 0.36.
  • Fat intake from dinner at baseline did not show an association with short sleep duration at follow-up.
