Daily melatonin patterns during delirium in older patients—early findings

Updated

Abstract

A significant difference in melatonin hormone concentration was observed at 12:00 between patients with acute delirium and those after its resolution, with values of 18.5 and 12.9 respectively (p<0.01).

  • Delirium was diagnosed most often on the second and third day of hospitalization in elderly patients.
  • Melatonin hormone levels varied significantly during acute delirium compared to after recovery.
  • Different melatonin concentration patterns were identified in patients with and without dementia.
  • Delirium recovery is associated with changes in the daily pattern of melatonin levels.
