Seizures returning after starting GLP-1 receptor drugs in adults with epilepsy

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist initiation is associated with a lower risk of seizure recurrence in adults with epilepsy and type 2 diabetes.

  • GLP-1 RA initiation is linked to a 18% reduced risk of seizure recurrence.
  • There is a 65% lower risk of hospitalization associated with initiating GLP-1 RAs.
  • All-cause mortality risk is reduced by 60% with GLP-1 RA initiation.
  • Smaller associations were observed for status epilepticus and ICU admission, with the latter not being statistically significant.
  • Findings are based on a matched cohort of 8688 pairs from electronic health records.
