Duzhong Fang (DZF) may reduce Parkinson’s-like damage caused by rotenone by affecting the gut-brain communication through intestinal serotonin production

Updated

Abstract

Duzhong Fang (DZF) markedly improved motor dysfunction in a PD-like mouse model.

  • DZF increased the density of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells in the brain.
  • Colonic inflammation was alleviated following DZF treatment.
  • DZF reduced the accumulation of alpha-synuclein in both the vagus nerve and brain.
  • Colonic alpha-synuclein levels showed a decreasing trend after treatment.
  • DZF downregulated certain intestinal proteins related to serotonin production and altered gut microbiota composition.
