Six different sleep-wake patterns during lockdown stayed linked to distinct sleep and health problems

Updated

Abstract

Participants included 572 students in May 2020 and 773 students in May 2021.

  • Responses to health and sleep-related questions were not randomly distributed across six distinct chronotypes.
  • Morning, afternoon, and vigilant chronotypes reported healthier sleep, mood, and behaviors compared to evening, napping, and lethargic types.
  • The healthiest sleep and habits were associated with morning types, while evening types reported the least healthy sleep and behaviors.
  • Differences in health and sleep problems related to chronotypes persisted even after the lockdown period.
  • The association between evening chronotypes and poorer health may not be solely due to weekday sleep loss.
