Educational background and main causes of death among elderly people in Japan: A nationwide study

Abstract

During a follow-up period of 377,139 person-years, 6,628 deaths were recorded among participants.

  • Individuals with low levels of education had an increased overall risk of death, with relative risks of 1.16 for men and 1.26 for women.
  • Increased risks were observed for death from cancers, with relative risks of 1.17 in men and 1.10 in women.
  • Death from external causes was significantly higher in individuals with low educational attainment, showing relative risks of 1.81 in men and 1.78 in women.
  • Ischemic heart disease risk was marginally reduced in men with low levels of education, with a relative risk of 0.77.
