Changes in Emergency Room Visits for Cannabis Overuse Sickness After Legalizing and Selling Recreational Cannabis in Ontario, Canada

Abstract

Monthly rates of cannabis hyperemesis syndrome emergency department visits increased 13-fold during the 7.5-year study period.

  • There were 12,866 emergency department visits for cannabis hyperemesis syndrome from 8,140 individuals.
  • The mean age of individuals visiting the emergency department for CHS was 27.4 years, with 51.5% being female.
  • Legalization of cannabis was not associated with immediate or gradual changes in rates of CHS emergency department visits.
  • Commercialization during the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with an immediate increase in CHS emergency department visits.
  • Rates of CHS visits increased more significantly in women and individuals aged 19 to 24 years compared to men and younger individuals.
