Emergency visits for traffic injuries involving cannabis after legalization and sales began

Abstract

Annual rates of cannabis-involved traffic injury emergency department visits increased 475.3% from 2010 to 2021.

  • Of 947,604 traffic injury emergency department visits, only 426 (0.04%) involved cannabis.
  • Legalization with restrictions led to a 94% increase in quarterly cannabis involvement rates compared to prelegalization.
  • Commercialization and the COVID-19 pandemic were associated with a 223% increase in cannabis-involved visits.
  • Male sex, living in low-income neighborhoods, being aged 19 to 21 years, and having prior cannabis-related visits were positively associated with cannabis involvement in traffic injuries.
