Cannabis-related emergency visits for self-harm after medical and recreational cannabis became legal

Updated

Abstract

The annual rate of emergency department visits for self-harm involving cannabis increased by 90.1% from 2010 to 2021.

  • Among 158,912 individuals with self-harm ED visits, 4.9% had a co-diagnosis of cannabis use.
  • The rate of self-harm ED visits involving alcohol decreased by 17.3% during the same period.
  • The increase in cannabis-related self-harm visits began after the liberalization of medical cannabis.
  • No further significant increases were observed during the periods of legalization with restrictions or commercialization.
  • The findings suggest a need for better detection and intervention for cannabis use in individuals at risk of self-harm.
