The body’s internal clock reduces nighttime blood pressure response to standing in older adults

Older adults show significantly impaired systolic blood pressure responses at 1 minute (P = 0.014) and 3 minutes (P = 0.03) after standing, particularly during the biological night.

  • Approximately 30% of older adults experience falls, which are a leading cause of injury and death.
  • Impaired blood pressure maintenance after standing is a predictive factor for future falls and mortality.
  • The internal body clock negatively affects blood pressure responses in healthy older adults during nighttime standing.
  • In older adults, blood pressure significantly decreased during the night when standing and did not recover within 3 minutes.
  • Heart rate responses upon standing were elevated but did not show significant differences between older and midlife adults.
