Epicatechin Gallate may Reduce UVB Skin Aging by Blocking Stress and Cell Cleanup Processes Controlled by p38α

Abstract

Epicatechin gallate (ECG) significantly attenuated UVB-induced photoaging in human skin cells.

  • A murine model showed that prolonged UVB exposure leads to skin roughness, erythema, hyperpigmentation, and increased wrinkle formation.
  • ECG may protect human epidermal keratinocytes from UVB-induced damage by targeting the p38α protein.
  • ECG treatment suppressed the activation of p38α, leading to reduced oxidative stress and improved autophagy.
  • Increased levels of certain proteins (LC3B) and decreased levels of others (p62) indicated enhanced autophagic flux with ECG treatment.
  • ECG also reduced markers of cellular aging and inflammation in response to UVB exposure.
