Evolutionary Factors Linked to Long-Term Symptoms After COVID-19

Abstract

Among 112 patients, 33.9% experienced persistent post-COVID syndrome (PCS) symptoms after a mean of 12.1 months.

  • The most common symptoms reported included dyspnea (67.9%), asthenia (67.0%), fatigue (57.1%), and myalgia (49.1%).
  • At baseline, 59.8% of patients scored 2 points, 40.2% scored 3 points, and 2.6% scored 4 points on the post-COVID-19 Functional Status scale.
  • A significant association was found between PCS persistence and the absence of rhinitis during acute infection (odds ratio 3.67).
  • The presence of fatigue and moderate to severe depression at baseline was also significantly linked to PCS persistence.
  • Two symptom clusters were identified: one involving anxiety, depression, and severe functional impairment, and another with palpitations, hyporexia, and dyspnea.
  • The model used demonstrated a good fit and predictive capacity for identifying PCS persistence.
