Too Much Leucine in Growing Pigs' Diets Lowers Growth, Protein Use, and Serotonin Production

Updated

Abstract

Increasing dietary Leu from 100% to 300% of the requirement resulted in a linear decrease in average daily feed intake and gain-to-feed ratio.

  • Higher dietary Leu levels were associated with decreased nitrogen retention and a lower biological value of dietary protein.
  • Plasma urea nitrogen increased with higher dietary Leu concentrations.
  • Plasma serotonin levels decreased quadratically, while hypothalamic serotonin levels decreased linearly as dietary Leu increased.
  • Liver concentrations of branched-chain amino acids increased, whereas skeletal muscle concentrations decreased with elevated dietary Leu.
  • Concentrations of certain metabolites in the liver, skeletal muscle, and serum changed significantly with increasing dietary Leu.
