How adding isoleucine and valine affects nitrogen balance and branched-chain amino acid metabolism in growing pigs fed diets with enough or extra leucine

Updated

Abstract

A total of 144 barrows were studied, revealing that excess dietary Leu reduced nitrogen retention and increased plasma urea nitrogen (PUN).

  • High levels of corn protein in diets may elevate concentrations of leucine (Leu), potentially impacting nitrogen retention negatively.
  • Excess Leu in diets significantly decreased nitrogen retention and biological value of protein while increasing plasma urea nitrogen.
  • Supplementation with valine (Val) in diets containing excess Leu was associated with reduced plasma urea nitrogen.
  • Liver concentrations of Leu were higher in pigs fed excess Leu diets compared to those fed adequate Leu diets.
  • Increasing dietary isoleucine (Ile) raised plasma-free Ile and its metabolite, but the effect was more pronounced in diets without excess Leu.
  • Valine supplementation did not increase plasma concentrations of its metabolite in diets with excess Leu.
