Factors Affecting How People Use Mobile Health Apps to Prevent or Manage Long-Term Diseases

The average adherence score for mHealth apps targeting noncommunicable diseases is 56.0%.

  • Four intervention-related factors positively influence adherence across all health domains: personalized content, individualized push notifications, user-friendly app design, and personal support.
  • Social features and gamification elements may enhance app adherence in several health domains.
  • A variety of patient-related factors, including user characteristics and recruitment methods, can affect adherence levels.
  • The review included 99 studies out of 2862 initially identified articles, indicating a limited but focused body of evidence on adherence to mHealth apps.
  • The findings highlight the need for clear definitions of intended use and objective reporting of actual app usage in future research.
