Abstract

Aging and a high-fat diet both dampen circadian behavior in Drosophila melanogaster.

  • Aging and high-fat diet together weaken circadian rhythms, particularly affecting the fat body tissue.
  • Molecular clocks in the fat body showed a significant decrease in rhythm amplitude due to aging and dietary stress.
  • Disruption of the CLOCK protein in the fat body led to a shortened lifespan on a high-fat diet.
  • The CLOCK disruption increased the expression of antimicrobial peptides, reduced behavioral rhythms, and lowered locomotor activity.
  • In contrast, disruption of other clock components like CYCLE, PERIOD, and TIMELESS did not produce the same effects.
