Naringenin’s relaxing effect on muscle contractions in rat colon

Updated

Abstract

Naringenin induced a concentration-dependent inhibition on rat colonic spontaneous contractions (1-1000 μM).

  • Naringenin's effect on colonic smooth muscle contractions was reversible after washout.
  • Inhibition of external calcium influx and intracellular calcium increase was observed with naringenin at 100 μM.
  • Naringenin caused hyperpolarization of membrane potential in colonic smooth muscle cells, which was influenced by specific channel inhibitors.
  • An iberiotoxin-sensitive current was stimulated by naringenin under patch-clamp conditions, independent of changes in intracellular calcium concentration.
  • In vivo, naringenin significantly reduced colon transit that was enhanced by neostigmine.
