Fluoxetine compared to other depression medications

Updated

Abstract

A total of 171 studies involving 24,868 participants were analyzed to compare the effects of fluoxetine to various antidepressants for depression.

  • Fluoxetine was found to be as effective as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) based on both dichotomous and continuous outcomes.
  • In comparison to dothiepin, sertraline, mirtazapine, and venlafaxine, fluoxetine was less effective on a dichotomous outcome measure.
  • On a continuous outcome measure, fluoxetine was more effective than ABT-200 and milnacipran, but less effective than venlafaxine.
  • Fluoxetine demonstrated better tolerability than TCAs as a group and individual antidepressants like amitriptyline and newer agents such as ABT-200 and pramipexole.
  • Most studies included in the analysis showed methodological shortcomings, raising concerns about the reliability of the findings.
