Guidelines for Treating Folliculitis Decalvans from the European Hair Disease Experts

Updated

Abstract

Folliculitis decalvans is diagnosed in 2.8% of patients with hair loss.

  • The disease is characterized by chronic and relapsing inflammation leading to scarring alopecia.
  • Treatment aims to control inflammation and prevent further hair loss, though hair regrowth is not expected.
  • Oral antibiotics are recommended for patients with moderate to severe inflammation.
  • A short course of oral glucocorticosteroids may benefit patients with highly active disease.
  • Oral isotretinoin is suggested as first-line therapy for mild active cases and should be considered for refractory disease.
  • Topical therapies, surgical excision, or laser therapy may also be effective in managing folliculitis decalvans.
