How diabetes medicines affect lung health in people with different levels of frailty

Abstract

Among 14,787 matched pairs, SGLT2i use was associated with a lower risk of a composite pulmonary endpoint compared to DPP-4i.

  • SGLT2i use may reduce the risk of first hospitalization for COPD exacerbation or pneumonia (sHR 0.83).
  • There was a decreased risk of COPD hospitalization in the fit/mild subgroup (sHR 0.82).
  • Pneumonia hospitalization risk decreased across all frailty levels with SGLT2i use (sHR range 0.65-0.85).
  • SGLT2i users experienced lower all-cause hospitalization (sHR 0.91) and significantly reduced all-cause mortality (sHR 0.60).
  • No significant differences in outcomes were observed when comparing SGLT2i to GLP-1 RA.
