FTO Gene Variant Linked to Hormone Levels and Obesity Risk in Romanian Children

Abstract

Obese children with the AA genotype of the FTO gene variant rs9939609 have a 2.02 times higher risk for obesity compared to those with AT+TT genotypes.

  • The FTO gene variant rs9939609 is significantly associated with obesity in a Romanian population.
  • Carriers of the risk allele for the rs17817449 variant show higher values for several metabolic and anthropometric measures.
  • Associations were observed between combined FTO genotypes (AA/GG) and various measures of body fat and metabolic biomarkers.
  • Increased levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol are linked with certain FTO gene variants.
