Abstract
Nineteen clock mutations were mapped to the three kai genes in cyanobacteria.
- Cyanobacteria possess a circadian clock, making them the simplest organisms known to exhibit this feature.
- Promoter activities of the kaiA and kaiB genes demonstrated circadian rhythms of expression.
- Messenger RNAs of both kaiA and kaiBC exhibited circadian cycling.
- Inactivation of any single kai gene eliminated the circadian rhythms and decreased promoter activity of kaiBC.
- Overexpression of kaiC continuously suppressed the kaiBC promoter, while overexpression of kaiA enhanced it.
- Temporal overexpression of kaiC was able to reset the phase of the rhythms.
