Daily Feedback Control of the kaiABC Gene Group in Cyanobacteria

Abstract

Nineteen clock mutations were mapped to the three kai genes in cyanobacteria.

  • Cyanobacteria possess a circadian clock, making them the simplest organisms known to exhibit this feature.
  • Promoter activities of the kaiA and kaiB genes demonstrated circadian rhythms of expression.
  • Messenger RNAs of both kaiA and kaiBC exhibited circadian cycling.
  • Inactivation of any single kai gene eliminated the circadian rhythms and decreased promoter activity of kaiBC.
  • Overexpression of kaiC continuously suppressed the kaiBC promoter, while overexpression of kaiA enhanced it.
  • Temporal overexpression of kaiC was able to reset the phase of the rhythms.
