Abstract
The kai gene cluster is essential for generating circadian rhythms in the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942.
- KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC proteins directly associate in yeast cells and cyanobacterial cells.
- KaiC enhances the interaction between KaiA and KaiB in both in vitro and yeast systems.
- A long period mutation, kaiA1, significantly increases the interaction between KaiA and KaiB in vitro.
- Direct interactions among the Kai proteins may be critical for circadian rhythm generation in cyanobacteria.
