Physical interactions between daily rhythm proteins KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC in cyanobacteria

Abstract

The kai gene cluster is essential for generating circadian rhythms in the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942.

  • KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC proteins directly associate in yeast cells and cyanobacterial cells.
  • KaiC enhances the interaction between KaiA and KaiB in both in vitro and yeast systems.
  • A long period mutation, kaiA1, significantly increases the interaction between KaiA and KaiB in vitro.
  • Direct interactions among the Kai proteins may be critical for circadian rhythm generation in cyanobacteria.
