General and sports nutrition knowledge of recreational athletes

Abstract

The mean total nutritional knowledge score among 409 recreational athletes was 50.7%, indicating an average level of understanding.

  • General nutritional knowledge scored an average of 62.7%, while sports nutritional knowledge was classified as poor at 45.2%.
  • Male participants exhibited higher scores in sports and total nutritional knowledge compared to female participants, but not in general nutritional knowledge.
  • Younger participants aged 18-24 scored better across all categories of nutritional knowledge than older age groups.
  • Participants who had previous nutritional consultations with a nutritionist scored significantly higher in all areas of nutritional knowledge.
  • Individuals with advanced formal nutrition education achieved substantially higher scores than those with no or intermediate education levels.
