A 1 kg/m² lower body mass index via the GIP receptor score is associated with a 29% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.

  • Genetically proxied weight reduction through the GIP receptor pathway may significantly lower cardiovascular disease risk.
  • A 1 kg/m² decrease in BMI linked to the GIP receptor is associated with a 43% lower risk of heart failure.
  • Polygenic weight reduction, not involving GIP-related genes, shows a smaller reduction in cardiovascular risk (3% for MACE and 13% for heart failure).
  • Mediators of the reduced risk include lower BMI (13% for MACE, 16% for heart failure) and lower glycated hemoglobin (22% for MACE, 17% for heart failure).
