Pregnancy Weight Gain and Risks for Mothers and Babies with Preexisting or Pregnancy-Related Diabetes

Updated

Abstract

Of 8,322 deliveries analyzed, 47% experienced excess gestational weight gain.

  • Excess gestational weight gain is associated with higher odds of cesarean delivery, preeclampsia, large for gestational age infants, and macrosomia.
  • Standardized measures of gestational weight gain also indicate increased likelihood of preterm birth and neonatal death with excess weight gain.
  • Less than recommended gestational weight gain is linked to a lower risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, but a higher risk of small for gestational age infants.
  • Less gestational weight gain, when assessed by standardized scores, is associated with a reduced likelihood of stillbirth.
