GLP-1 Agonist Use Is Not Linked to Better Paraspinal Muscle Quality in Diabetic Patients with Low Back Pain

Abstract

Data from 38 patients on a GLP-1 receptor agonist showed no significant changes in muscle quality measures over an average treatment duration of 21.7 months.

  • Total muscle area, functional cross-sectional area, and fatty infiltration were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging in diabetic patients with low back pain.
  • Comparative analysis revealed no significant longitudinal differences in muscle quality between patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists and those on other diabetes medications.
  • The study suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonist use may not be associated with changes in paraspinal muscle quality in this population.
  • A potential limitation is that the study may have been underpowered to detect small to moderate effects.
