GLP-1 Agonists and Their Possible Role in Brain Changes Linked to Parkinson's Disease: A Nationwide Study

Updated

Abstract

Among 33,462 patients, sustained users of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) had a lower hazard ratio of developing Parkinson's disease (HR 0.57).

  • 192 patients developed Parkinson's disease during follow-up, with 93 cases occurring during sustained treatment.
  • Sustained GLP-1RA users showed a lower absolute risk difference of -0.24 compared to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor users.
  • Similar trends were observed when comparing GLP-1RA users to insulin users.
  • A significant survival advantage was noted among sustained GLP-1RA users, particularly against insulin.
  • Results not accounting for adherence were not statistically significant.
