Using GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP drugs before pregnancy to treat obesity

Updated

Abstract

Obesity among women of reproductive age is rising and significantly contributes to subfertility.

  • Maternal obesity is associated with increased risks for complications during pregnancy and for the newborn.
  • Preconception weight optimization is emphasized in clinical guidelines to mitigate risks for both mothers and infants.
  • There is growing interest in the role of incretin-based anti-obesity medications in preconception care.
  • Incidental exposure to these medications during early pregnancy is becoming more likely due to unplanned pregnancies.
  • The review focuses on human evidence regarding GLP-1 and dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists for obesity treatment.
