Use of GLP-1 drugs and cancer risk in obese adults without diabetes

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1RA use is associated with a 41% lower incidence of obesity-associated cancers in obese, nondiabetic patients.

  • The cohort consisted of 229,467 patients, with 86,422 receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs).
  • After matching for propensity scores, the analysis included 161,798 patients, with 80,899 in each treatment group.
  • A median follow-up of 2 years revealed a hazard ratio of 0.59 for any obesity-associated cancers among GLP-1RA users.
  • Lower cumulative incidence of obesity-associated cancers was noted across most subgroups, excluding the black race.
  • Results were validated through inverse probability of treatment weighting analysis.
