Eustachian Tube Problems Linked to Drugs That Activate GLP-1 Receptors: Review of Ear and Throat Side Effects

Abstract

A total of 97,237 adverse events were reported with GLP-1 receptor agonists, including 958 otologic cases.

  • Cases of autophony and aural fullness were observed following the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Nasal endoscopy revealed a significant loss of tissue bulk in the eustachian tube cushions in affected individuals.
  • The majority of otologic adverse events included hypoacusis (515), vertigo (203), and deafness (97).
  • Dulaglutide was associated with the highest number of potential eustachian tube dysfunction-related adverse events (417).
  • Exenatide exhibited the greatest proportion of potential eustachian tube dysfunction-related adverse events at 1.52%.
  • The systematic review identified nasopharyngitis, sinusitis, and unspecified dizziness as the top otologic side effects linked to GLP-1 receptor agonists.
