Use of GLP-1 receptor drugs linked to worsening mental health in people with depression and anxiety in Sweden

Abstract

The cohort included 95,490 individuals with a mean age of 50.6 years diagnosed with depression or anxiety who used antidiabetic medications.

  • Semaglutide was associated with a lower risk of worsening mental illness (hazard ratio 0.58).
  • Liraglutide also showed a reduced risk of worsening mental illness (hazard ratio 0.82).
  • Exenatide and dulaglutide were not associated with a significant change in mental illness risk.
  • Semaglutide was linked to decreased risk of worsening depression (hazard ratio 0.56) and anxiety (0.62).
  • Liraglutide was associated with a lower risk of worsening depression (hazard ratio 0.74) only.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists as a group were associated with a reduced risk of self-harm (hazard ratio 0.56).
