GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Treatment and Heart and Kidney Outcomes in Type 1 Diabetes: A Matched Real-World Study

Abstract

GLP-1-based therapy was associated with a 67% lower risk of all-cause mortality in adults with type 1 diabetes.

  • In a large cohort of 4088 adults with type 1 diabetes, GLP-1-based therapy was linked to a 62% reduction in heart failure risk.
  • The therapy was associated with a 39% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.
  • Patients receiving GLP-1 therapy had a 30% lower rate of all-cause hospitalisation.
  • The incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis did not increase with GLP-1 therapy.
  • Hypoglycemia risk decreased by 28% among those treated with GLP-1-based therapies.
  • Fewer than 10 events of pancreatitis were reported in both treatment groups.
