Two-year shoulder healing after rotator cuff surgery in type 2 diabetes with GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment

Abstract

In a cohort of 957 patients, 2-year revision surgery occurred in 1.0% of GLP-1 receptor agonist users compared to 1.1% of those on other diabetes therapies.

  • Pre-index use of GLP-1 receptor agonists in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus did not show a significant increase in the risk of revision surgery after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
  • The rate of retear-proxy events was 7.3% in GLP-1RA users and 8.6% in the comparator group, with no significant difference observed.
  • Statistical analyses indicated that the risk ratios for both revision surgery and retear-proxy events were close to 1, suggesting similar outcomes between the two groups.
  • The findings contribute to the understanding of the safety profile of GLP-1 receptor agonists in the context of rotator cuff repair but must be viewed cautiously due to the low number of revision surgeries.
