Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) may be associated with lower rates of hepatic decompensation and incident hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

  • Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic dysfunction-related liver disease are increasing risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • Clinical trials indicate GLP-1RAs improve steatosis and metabolic dysfunction-related liver disease, especially in patients without cirrhosis.
  • Real-world studies suggest that GLP-1RA use could reduce the progression of cirrhosis and associated complications.
  • The most significant benefits of GLP-1RAs are often seen when compared to insulin or sulfonylureas.
  • Mechanistic insights suggest that GLP-1RAs may protect the liver indirectly by reducing insulin resistance and inflammation.
