What We Know About How GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Affect Fertility

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are associated with improved reproductive outcomes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and infertility.

  • Clinical trials indicate that combining GLP-1RAs with metformin can increase menstrual regularity, ovulation, and pregnancy rates.
  • In a randomized trial, pregnancy rates reached 69.2% with liraglutide plus metformin compared to 35.4% with metformin alone (p<0.05).
  • Ovulation rates of up to 86% have been reported with the use of exenatide plus metformin, surpassing those of monotherapy.
  • Liraglutide and exenatide have been linked to improved follicular development and endometrial receptivity.
  • GLP-1RAs exert potential effects such as anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, and androgen-lowering actions in reproductive tissues.
  • Despite potential benefits, GLP-1RAs are contraindicated during pregnancy due to limited human data and observed fetal risks.
