Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) may address key barriers to wound healing in diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).

  • DFUs are characterized by persistent inflammation, impaired blood vessel formation, and delayed skin regeneration.
  • GLP-1 RAs could suppress inflammatory signaling pathways and activate processes that promote tissue repair.
  • Mechanisms include enhancing cell migration, improving blood vessel function, and shifting immune cell behavior toward healing.
  • Restoration of immune cell function and promotion of factors that support blood vessel growth are also observed.
  • Preclinical evidence suggests potential benefits, but clinical trials comparing GLP-1 RA therapy with standard treatment are necessary.
