GLP-1 receptor drugs and their link to blood inflammation levels in type 2 diabetes

Abstract

In a meta-analysis of 52 randomized controlled trials involving 4734 participants, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) significantly reduced several inflammatory biomarkers.

  • GLP-1 RAs treatment led to significant reductions in C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, interleukin-1β, and leptin.
  • Reductions in inflammatory biomarkers were quantified with standard mean differences ranging from -0.63 to -3.89.
  • GLP-1 RAs were also associated with a significant increase in adiponectin levels.
  • Participants had a median follow-up of 24 weeks and a mean age of 54.13 years.
  • The study population included approximately 44.46% females, with a body mass index of 29.80 kg/m² and a diabetes duration of 7.27 years.
