GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Risk of Kidney Failure Treatment and Health Care Use in Bipolar Disorder Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist use is associated with a 56% lower risk of kidney replacement therapy compared to DPP-4 inhibitors.

  • Compared to DPP-4 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists are linked to a lower risk of healthcare utilization.
  • Five-year kidney replacement therapy-free survival was 87.93% for GLP-1 RA users versus 84.63% for DPP-4 inhibitor users.
  • GLP-1 RA use also demonstrated a lower risk of kidney replacement therapy when compared to renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors.
  • After matching for baseline characteristics, the five-year kidney replacement therapy-free survival rate was 94.68% for GLP-1 RA users against 89.77% for RAAS users.
  • The observed benefits of GLP-1 RA were consistent across various demographic and treatment subgroups.
