Effectiveness and safety of GLP-1 receptor drugs in fatty liver disease with scarring

Updated

Abstract

In a meta-analysis of 1,800 patients, GLP-1 receptor agonists significantly improved histological resolution of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) without worsening fibrosis.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists demonstrated a risk ratio of 2.96 for MASH resolution without worsening fibrosis in patients with F2-F3 fibrosis.
  • A risk ratio of 1.59 was observed for improvement of fibrosis without worsening MASH.
  • Treatment resulted in significant reductions in aminotransferases, HbA1c, serum lipids, blood pressure, and improvements in anthropometric parameters.
  • Higher rates of gastrointestinal adverse events were noted with GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment, but serious adverse events did not differ significantly from placebo.
