Possible role of GLP-1 receptor activators in osteoarthritis

Updated

Abstract

Osteoarthritis affects over 500 million people globally.

  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) may reduce weight and improve glycemic control in individuals with osteoarthritis (OA).
  • Clinical studies indicate that GLP-1 RAs could lower inflammatory markers associated with OA progression.
  • Notable weight loss and pain reduction were observed in knee OA patients treated with semaglutide in the STEP-9 trial.
  • Some studies demonstrated that GLP-1 RAs may decrease oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines, potentially alleviating OA symptoms.
  • Results vary among studies, with effectiveness possibly linked to the extent of weight loss achieved.
