Views and experiences of weight-loss drugs (GLP-1 receptor agonists) in the United Kingdom

Updated

Abstract

A survey of 684 participants found high satisfaction with GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) among users.

  • Users reported concerns about perceived reductions in energy, dietary habits, and muscle mass associated with GLP-1RA use.
  • Age and BMI were found to influence the experiences and perceptions of GLP-1RA users.
  • Most GLP-1RA users sourced their medication from online pharmacies with inconsistent pre-assessment standards.
  • Social media was identified as the primary source of information regarding GLP-1RAs, while healthcare professionals were consulted less frequently.
  • A minority of users exhibited behaviors suggesting misuse, such as exceeding recommended doses due to perceived ineffectiveness.
  • Non-users showed conditional willingness to try GLP-1RAs if supported by clinical recommendations and stronger evidence, but expressed concerns about side effects and long-term safety.
