GLP-1 Therapy May Protect Against Complications After ERCP Procedure

Abstract

Among 21,818 matched patients, those receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists had significantly lower rates of major ERCP-related adverse events within 30 days.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist exposure is associated with a reduced risk of acute pancreatitis (RR: 0.47).
  • Patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists have a significantly lower incidence of cholangitis (RR: 0.56).
  • There is a reduced risk of sepsis in patients receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists (RR: 0.51).
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding rates are lower among those treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists (RR: 0.49).
  • Biliary stricture occurrences are also significantly decreased with GLP-1 receptor agonist use (RR: 0.52).
  • The need for repeat ERCP procedures is lower in patients who received GLP-1 receptor agonists (RR: 0.53).
